How Multiplicity works

How to read Multiplicity.

Multiplicity ranks your listening. This explains what those rankings mean, what sits behind them, and why the product stays quiet in the places it does.

01

What Multiplicity is

Multiplicity turns the listening history you connect into a personal music record.

It reads that one history at several speeds: what has lasted, what is active now, and how the two move against each other. No quiz, no self-reported taste. The listening record does the work.

It measures what your listening did. It does not judge whether the music is good.

02

CAИON

CAИON is the lifetime layer: your Albums, Artists and Tracks ranked into a record of what endured.

Each of the three is its own lane with its own ranking space, and positions never cross between them. Your third album and your third artist are two separate findings.

CAИON is built from listening evidence, so it moves as your listening does. Saving an edition preserves what it looked like at that point.

It is personal. One listener's CAИON is not comparable with another's, and it is not a claim about the music itself.

03

Rank and Rating

Two readings of one position.

Rank
Where something currently sits in that CAИON lane. First is ahead of second. That is the whole claim.
Rating
Rating measures how powerfully this sits in your CAИON. Higher means more defining. It is relative to your own listening and has no fixed maximum. Compare albums with albums, artists with artists, and tracks with tracks.

Rank gives you the order. Rating gives you the strength. They answer different questions, so a record can sit high in a lane without holding the strongest Rating in it.

Rating is not a percentage, a mark out of ten or a hundred, or a review score. There is no ceiling to reach. Album, Artist and Track Ratings carry the same meaning, but the numbers are not comparable across the three lanes.

Ranks are settled before any Rating exists. A Rating reports the order. It does not set it.

04

Evidence

Under Why this ranks here you may find receipts: selected observations that support a position, drawn from your own listening record.

They are chosen, not exhaustive. One fact worth saying out loud beats a column of weak ones, so some objects carry several, most carry one, and many carry none.

The silence is deliberate. No receipt means nothing cleared the bar worth stating, not that the position is unsupported. The full ranking also considers the wider pattern of your listening history.

This holds everywhere in Multiplicity. Where the evidence cannot fund a claim, the product says less rather than estimating.

05

Album-Equivalent Plays

AEP is Album-Equivalent Plays.

A track play is not an album play. Play four tracks from a nine-track record twice and the raw count says eight, which reads like far more of the record than you heard. AEP divides album plays by the number of tracks on the release, so the number reads as whole plays of the album, and a tight EP is not out-muscled by a long double album.

It needs a verified track count. Where a release length cannot be verified, and on releases under five tracks, no AEP is shown rather than a number nobody can vouch for.

AEP is one listening measure. It is not the Rating, and it does not decide Album rank on its own.

06

Change, history and saved editions

A saved edition records your CAИON at that time. It does not change when your current ranking changes. Editions gather in your Archive.

Movement
A rise, a fall or NEW against your previous edition. It appears only where the two are genuinely comparable. Where they are not, nothing is shown, and a missing arrow is never a zero.
Method updated
A point where a lane's calculation changed enough that the two sides should not be read as one continuous line. Older editions keep their own values. Nothing is rewritten to match today.

History follows the same rule as evidence. It appears where there are trustworthy comparable observations behind it, which is why Artists and Albums currently carry a deeper trajectory than Tracks. Where the record does not support a line, none is drawn.

07

Records, Rankings and LEDGER

LEDGER is the evidence system underneath your CAИON: play counts, records, rankings and the dated history behind them. Records and Rankings are its two lanes.

Records
Personal bests set inside a fixed window, such as a week or a month. Once earned, a record stays set.
Rankings
Every play counted across a range you choose, so positions move as you keep listening.

CAИON is the interpreted reading of your listening. LEDGER is the count underneath it. A CAИON rank and a Ledger rank are measured differently and will not agree, which is expected rather than an error.

08

ROTATIOИ and AИNUAL

The same history, read on different clocks.

ROTATIOИ is the current month, renewing as it goes. AИNUAL is a year-level view, ranked by plays and kept separately from CAИON. CAИON is the lifetime layer.

These are time horizons, not plans or tiers. Nothing graduates from one into another, and a strong month does not become a lifetime position by sitting still.

09

Sources and privacy

Multiplicity builds from the listening history you connect. Sources differ in what they recorded and which periods they cover, and Multiplicity reconciles what is available to it.

What can be known depends on what was recorded. Where a source kept totals but never kept dates, that listening counts toward a total and cannot be placed on a timeline, which is why some surfaces are richer than others.

Imported ratings, loves and stars are evidence about your relationship with music. They do not create plays and they do not change the ranking.

Your connected history builds your own Multiplicity. Publishing a profile or sharing an edition publishes that artefact only; it does not open your account. The Privacy Policy covers what is held and your rights over it.
